School zone speed cameras not in use during summer break
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Schools are out for the summer, but some Charlottesville school zone speed limit lights are still flashing.
The cameras are used to make sure school zones are safe during pickup and drop off times. Charlottesville police say tickets are only given during school hours and not over the summer.
Charlottesville Police Public Safety Information Officer Kyle Ervin says the cameras are only active when school is in session.
“Those school zone speed cameras are only active when school is in session, so pick up times and drop off times when the school zone flashing lights are flashing, they are on,” Ervin said. “School is not in session, so those cameras aren’t active, and they’re not issuing any tickets over the summer.”
Charlottesville police added that just because school zone cameras are off does not mean drivers should be speeding.
