RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - On Saturday, Richmonders gathered to celebrate 100 years of Maymont.

Throughout the day, people stopped by the park to walk through the gardens and enjoy the green space.

Maymont was created during the Gilded Age in the late 1800’s.

James and Sallie Dooley lived at Maymont from 1893 through 1925.

After living in a mansion on the estate for roughly three decades, the pair donated the park to the City of Richmond to be used as a public space and museum for everyone to enjoy.

“For 100 years, that’s what we’ve been doing here at Maymont, is allowing free community green space, especially right in the heart of Richmond,” said Laurie Mavica with Maymont. “We’ve been doing that for 100 years and we’re looking forward to the next 100 years.”

Those who organized Saturday’s event said they wouldn’t have made it to this milestone without support from the community.
